Can I Eat This?

A mobile app for managing dietary restrictions for a range of reasons, from religious restrictions to food aversions and allergies.

Duration: 3 week sprint

Responsibilities: Team Lead, low-fi sketching and design, technical writing, project management.

Project type: UX Research and Prototyping

Project Deliverable

To design an app that shoppers can use to determine whether a given food item is likely to meet their dietary restraints.

Constraints and Assumptions

There are two major categories/user groups to focus on:

  1. First group focuses on restricted diet due to religious observance, weight, athletic performance and so on.

  2. Second group focuses on food allergies & medical restrictions like nut or gluten allergy.

We assume the user is logged in and the app is connected to back-end system and web service that has a list of known ingredients in every item and scores degree of compliance with dietary restrictions.

User Flow

Designing the Interface

Landing Page

We assume user is logged in so landing page leads to user profile and search screen.

Users result can be shared or saved in profile

Display definite result

Shows definitely “YOU CAN EAT THIS” OR “YOU CANNOT EAT THIS”

Gives score with a gauge based on users input on dietary restrictions

[ex: vegetarian & Celiac disease]

Provides detailed feedback explaining the reason using nutritional facts

Determining User Case

Upon sign up, user answers a few questions to personalize their experience and tune the back-end algorithm to their dietary restriction.

I created a total of 8 data collection screens that will help personalize results from their search.

These include questions about food allergies and diet restrictions.
